El propósito de esta investigación fue evaluar el potencial de retención de carbono en los bosques del patrimonio de la Empresa Forestal Integral Costa Sur, ubicada en la provincia de Artemisa. Se determinó la cantidad de carbono para cada uno de los componentes del patrimonio forestal de esta entidad, y para el procesamiento de la información se utilizó el sistema automatizado SUMFOR v. 2.16. El patrimonio de la empresa constituye un sumidero importante de carbono al acumular 10 010,2 Mt en 2014, lo que representa 194,3 t/ha, siendo los bosques naturales el mayor reservorio de carbono. La cantidad de carbono retenido en los bosques equivale a la remoción de 40 040,8 Mt de CO2 de la atmósfera. Se valoraron además alternativas, con lo cual la empresa garantizaría aumentar su contribución a la mitigación del cambio climático. Forests can play a fundamental role in mitigating climate change.
