Este trabajo tiene el objetivo de evaluar la eficiencia del sistema de protección contra incendios forestales en la provincia de Pinar del Río, Cuba, considerando un período de diez años (1997-2006). Para evaluar tal eficiencia se utilizaron los indicadores densidad de incendios, densidad de área afectada, media del área quemada por incendio, porcentaje de la superficie boscosa que se quema por año y tamaño de los incendios. Estos indicadores se han estimado observando elementos temporales (período de años seleccionado y meses del año) y espaciales (clases de bosques y grupos de especies). Como resultados pueden mencionarse, entre otros, que de forma general en el período se alcanzaron buenos valores de eficiencia en los distintos indicadores con excepción del porcentaje de la superficie boscosa que se quema. También se pudo definir que la eficiencia baja durante abril y mayo, a la vez que es menor en los bosques artificiales con excepción del indicador media del área quemada por incendio. En el caso de los grupos de especies se destaca el alto valor obtenido para Eucalyptus sp. en el caso de la densidad de incendios, siendo el resto de los indicadores mayores para Pinus sp. It’s important to have information about on the efficiency of the forest fire protection system for decisions making. This work has the objective of evaluate the efficiency of the forest fire protection system in the province of Pinar del Río, Cuba, considering a 10 year period (1997-2006). For the evaluation of the efficiency were used: density of fires, density of burn area, mean of the area burned by fire, percentage of the forest surface burned per year, and fire size. These indicators have been considered observing temporary elements (selected period of years and months of the year) and spatial elements (kinds of forests and groups of species). As results it can be mentioned, among others in a general way in the period, good values of efficiency were achieved in the different indicators except for the percentage of the forest surface burned. The low efficiency during the months of April and May could also be defined, at the same time it is smaller in the planted forests with exception for indicator mean of the area burned by fire. In the cases of groups of species high value stands out for Eucalyptus sp. In cases of density of fires, all the other indicators are bigger in Pinus sp.
