<dc:description xml:lang="en">The pine wood forests in the Alturas of Pizarra in the Guaniguanico Mountain, in the Province of Pinar del Río, are an important part of the Patrimony of country. In this region there is about 77000 ha between plantations and natural pines, which represent about 30% in the total of conifers of Cuba. The bark beetle species of the genus Ips are included in the most dangerous insects that cause losses in coniferous trees in the world. There is not information however about the difference of how these pine trees are harmed by these insects. To determine the differential vulnerability between Pinus caribaea Morelet and P. tropicalis Morelet in front of bark beetle of the genus Ips (Coleoptera: Scolytidae) was the objective of this work. The research was carried out in plantations with the two pine species, around the Viñales experimental station. Two types of experiments was carried out: a completely randomized block design in trunk of pines (log of 50 cm long and 14 to 16 cm d.) and the periodical sampling design in alive tree in which was evaluated the number of adults, larvaes, pupaes and the pin orifices made by the bark beetle to 15 tree each 10 rows of pine. In order to analyze data it was used the Duncan and the Mann Whitney test at 95.0% confidence level. The results showed that the majority of variables that had been analysed in the section of pines had not significant difference. However in the experiment of living tree, P. caribaea had more vulnerability to bark beetle than P. tropicalis.</dc:description>
