Este estudio tuvo como objetivo evaluar los servicios ecosistémicos proporcionados por esta especie en Playa Guanímar, Artemisa, Cuba, destacando su función ecológica y usos antrópicos. Se caracterizó la especie mediante revisión bibliográfica y se realizaron entrevistas a 27 pobladores locales para identificar sus aplicaciones tradicionales. Además, se clasificaron los servicios ecosistémicos según la Evaluación de los Ecosistemas del Milenio. Los resultados mostraron que A. germinans ofrece 11 servicios, que incluye provisión de madera, regulación climática (captura de carbono), soporte a la biodiversidad y beneficios culturales. Los pobladores utilizan su madera para postes, combustible y herramientas, aunque desconocen sus usos medicinales. Se identificaron potenciales usos sostenibles, como plantaciones para protección costera, producción de miel y como sumidero de carbono debido a su alta densidad de madera (1,090 g/cm³). Se concluyó que esta especie es fundamental para los ecosistemas costeros y su valoración permite diseñar estrategias de manejo que integren conservación y aprovechamiento local. Valuing the ecosystem services of Avicennia germinans (black mangrove) is crucial for its conservation and the sustainable management of mangroves, highly productive but threatened coastal ecosystems. This study aimed to evaluate the ecosystem services provided by this species at Guanímar Beach, Artemisa, Cuba, highlighting its ecological function and anthropogenic uses. The species was characterized through a literature review, and interviews were conducted with 27 local residents to identify its traditional uses. In addition, ecosystem services were classified according to the Millennium Ecosystem Assessment. The results showed that A. germinans provides 11 services, including wood provision, climate regulation (carbon sequestration), biodiversity support, and cultural benefits. Residents use its wood for poles, fuel, and tools, although its medicinal uses are unknown. Potential sustainable uses were identified, such as plantations for coastal protection, honey production, and as a carbon sink due to its high wood density (1,090 g/cm³). It was concluded that this species is essential for coastal ecosystems, and its appreciation allows for the design of management strategies that integrate conservation and local use.
