Khaya nyasica Stapf y Khaya senegalensis Jussieu. Comportamiento en Cuba de ambas especies

Abstract
Las especies Khaya nyasica Staff. y Khaya senegalensis Juss, tienen su área de distribución geográfica en la región tropical de África: K. nyasica al sur de Ecuador y K. senegalensis al norte. En el área de su hábitat las precipitaciones son generalmente elevadas y las temperaturas altas. Estas especies prefieren suelos aluviales profundos, aunque K. senegalensis tolera los suelos secos de sabana. La madera de ambas especies es de mucha estimación en los mercados madereros, donde se cotiza a altos precios. Los árboles alcanzan gran desarrollo, siendo frecuentes los ejemplares de 35 a 40 cm. de altura y 0,70 a 1,20 m de diámetro; aunque en Rhodesia se han reportado ejemplares gigantescos de Khaya nyasica de 60 m de altura y 4,8 m de diámetro. En Cuba el crecimiento de estas especies es excelente, si se plantan en suelos profundos y fértiles. Un árbol de K. nyasica de 38 años, mide 35 m de altura y 1,20 m de diámetro y se calcula que produce más de 12 m³ de madera (unos 3,000 pies de taller de madera aserrada). Otros árboles más jóvenes crecen a un ritmo semejante. La Khaya nyasica es afectada en Cuba por agallas que se producen en la corteza, dando feo aspecto al árbol, pero sin afectar la madera. Esta enfermedad no aparece en Khaya senegalensis. Algunos árboles de K. nyasica manifiestan resistencia a la enfermedad. A partir de estos ejemplares se realizan en Cuba desde el año 1966 trabajos de mejoramiento genético, encaminados a desarrollar líneas resistentes de dicha especie o posibles híbridos entre K. nyasica y K. senegalensis.
