Abstract

The Gmelina arborea Roxb. is an original specie of the tropical region of Asia. It has been planted successfully in various countries of Asia, Africa and América. It's development is rapid; at the age of 3 - 4 years the roof of the treetop is closed, if it is planted with the adequate spacing and the right cultural attentions are given. The natural regeneration is good and it is reproduced vigorously, by means of renewing the stub. It is planted using stumps, eventhough they can also be planted by meana of postures produced in containers. The spacing varyfrom 2 x 2 m to 4 x 4 m. The wood of the specie is used among other things to boarding carpentry, door panels, developing timber for plywood, chemical and semichemical pulp for the elaboration of different types of papers. In this article we deal with the geographical distribution, the biology (the tree, the fruit and the seed), the habitat, the silviculture, the plagues and illnesses, the importance of the wood and the development of the specie in Cuba. In Cuba since 1966, small parcels have been established for its study in various arcas of the island. The trees have grown well, with an annual percent of 1,8 - 2,7 a in height and 2,5 - 5, 3 cm in diameter. The growths reported in Africa coincide with those obtained in Cuba.
