Abstract

This paper deals with the morphology, bionomy and some aspects on ecology and control of Hypsipyla grandella Zeller, the only species of the genus Hypsipyla found in Cuba. The fact that this pest has five instars in its larval state, as well as that its complete biological cycle varies from 25 to 34 days, developing approximately 5 generations during one year period, was determined by the study of its bionomy . Its population density is developed with slight fluctuations, giving origin to curves that form occasionally peaks. The presence of the insect is steady in the infested plantations, causing a gradation of a permanent kind. The regulation of the population density is associated with determined factors of environmental resistance, such as: parasitation, depredation, sensibility of Meliaceae to the attack, natural defense own characters of some species in this family, the occasional coincidence of the proper condition of this pest to increase its populations and the phyto-phenological dynamics of the host. In order to know the relationship between the attack intensity and the shooting of some Meliaceae, the results of the test, were analyzed biometrically as a prove of the independence between both factors. Chemical control tests were carried out obtaining the best results with the following insecticides or combinations of them: 1,0% DDT solution + 0,570 Dipterex solution (a.i.) and 0,5% Dipterex + Sevin (Carbaryl) solution (a.i.).
