Abstract
The genus Swietenia Jacq. consists of threr species, universally accepted in the scientific field: Swietenia mahagoni~Jacq.. Swietenia macrophylla King. and Swietenia humilis Zucc. In addition. there are five taxons, which in the opinion of some authors deserve the rank of species, while iahers consider that they are only varieties of the three species above mentioned. The genus Swietenia exists only in America; its geographical area ranges froin approximately parallel latitude North, in the South of Florida, to latitude South, in Bolivia. Observations made in Puerto Rico. Saint-Cross lsland and Martinique, sliow that there is an intermediate form between S. mahagoni and S. macrophylla, when these species grow in thc same neighbourhood. In Cuba, it has also being observed since several years, that when these two species are close to each other a high percentage of the offsprings present intermediate charactcristics. The investigations carried out have shown that the intermediate form is a F1 hybrid, product of the cross between S. mahagoni and S. macrophylla a; which proves a marked heterosis and, in some cases, epistafic phencmcna are observed on it. Someprogeny tests carried out in Cuba show a segregation in the F2 generation according to Mendels Laws; appearing clearly S. mahagoni, the F1 hybrid and S. macrophylla approximately in the rate 1:2:1.
