Retention of carbon by forest heritage forest Comprehensive Enterprise Villa Clara. First approach

Abstract

The study was carried out in the forest areas of the Integral Forest Company of Villa Clara (EFIVC) (43281.68 ha) being determined the quantity of retained carbon as well as its total sink capacity. For doing this, a methodology described by Álvarez, 2002 and 2003 was used. The results show that, though the forest areas of the EFIVC decreased in 8%, the potential of carbon sink in their areas was not significantly affected. The species of Pinus caribaea, Casuarina equisetifolia and Eucaliptus sp were those that more contributed to store the carbon. The Coastal protective forest and the Flora and Fauna protective forest were those that more carbon retained in their areas. The type of forest formation Mangrove retained 87% from the carbon when comparing it with the other forest formations in the area. To a rhythm of plantation of 1.332,49 ha per annum the areas would be planted to reach the maximum potential of the company of the order of the 4.693.271, 65 t of sink carbon in an 8.11 year cycle.
