Ventajas de la creación de poblaciones mejoradas de Psidium salutare (H. B. K.) Berg (guayabita del pinar)
Main Article Content
Abstract
Psidium salutare is an endemic species that habits in Pinar del Río and Isla de la Juventud in very poor soils associated with the pine forests. It has a great economical importance due the use of its fruits for the production of a liquor named «Guayabita del Pinar» which is a symbol of the identity of Pinar del Río province. During the last 15 years the University of Pinar del Río have carried out various studies for the conservation and the genetic improvement of the species, due to the genetic erosion in many of the natural populations, mostly because of the reduction of individuals in their natural habitats as well as the extinction of populations. Therefore, to maintain the current production of the liquor it’s needed the establishment of productive areas from the genetic improvement programs of the species and conservation areas. In this study we assess the advantage of this new created productive areas and the conservation for the sustainability in terms of the genetic variability and industrial production.
