Evaluation of environmental conditions of public spaces, el salvador municipality, Guantánamo, Cuba
Main Article Content
Abstract
The article addresses the evaluation of environmental conditions in public spaces of “El Salvador” municipality, Guantánamo, Cuba, highlighting the lack of urban vegetation in the area. The scarcity of green spaces is a problem that affects the quality of life for residents, as public spaces show significant deforestation. The main objective of the study was to assess the existing vegetation in these spaces in order to propose measures to improve environmental conditions. A floristic inventory was conducted in parks and main streets of the municipality, recording tree species, their phytosanitary condition, and the status of urban furniture. A total of eight tree species were identified, belonging to eight families, with a predominance of ornamental species such as Adonidia merrillii and Tabebuia angustata. Structural parameters such as relative abundance and the Importance Value Index (IVI) of the species were also evaluated. The results showed limited species diversity and an uneven distribution of vegetation, justifying the need to improve urban tree cover. In conclusion, actions were proposed for both the short and long term, including reforesting parks, improving furniture and lighting, and designing new public spaces to meet the recreational needs of the population.
