Relationship between environmental variables of Juniperus Saxicola Britton and P. Wilson in a fragment of the cloud forest of Turquino National Park
Main Article Content
Abstract
The study was conducted in 2018 in the “Aguada de Joaquín” Conservation Zone of the Turquino National Park, aiming to determine the influence of environmental variables on the vegetation associated with Juniperus saxicola Britton & P. Wilson. Six 10 x 50 m transects were established, and variables such as stoniness, abundance, richness, slope, altitude, and leaf litter were measured. Correspondence Analysis and Redundancy Analysis revealed that the most influential variables on the distribution of J. saxicola were altitude, abundance, and leaf litter. The results showed that J. saxicola is associated with sites of low altitude and higher leaf litter accumulation, with greater abundance in areas of lower species richness. Furthermore, altitude and leaf litter were the most correlated variables with species distribution. Leaf litter plays a key role in protecting the soil from erosion and creating a favorable microclimate for the species. The analysis indicated that the conservation of the species depends on the preservation of these environmental variables.
