Potentialities of the forest patrimony of the agricultural production cooperative Lázaro Peña
Main Article Content
Abstract
The study of forest heritage is crucial for the sustainable management of natural resources and climate change mitigation. This study aimed to characterize the potential of the forest heritage of the Lázaro Peña Agricultural Production Cooperative (CPA), classifying species by wood type, quality for sustainable forest management, and carbon sequestration capacity. Information from the CPA's forest inventory and simplified management plan for the 2019-2023 period was used, applying wood type classifications and using specialized software for data analysis and estimating carbon sequestration. The results showed that the forest heritage includes 33 genera and 34 species, with the families Sapindaceae, Sapotaceae, and Mimosaseae being the most representative. The species Eugenia buxifolia, Cupania americana, and Lysiloma bahamensis represented the largest volume, while precious woods such as Swietenia macrophylla were underrepresented. Carbon sequestration was 52,540 tons, with natural forests contributing 82.5%. A 26.5% increase in carbon sequestration was projected for 2029, highlighting the key role of plantations. The findings highlight the importance of forest diversity and sustainable management for climate change mitigation.
