Influence of edging on the production of high-quality softwood sawn timber

Abstract
Edging optimization in softwood sawnwood production is crucial to maximizing product quality and profitability. This study evaluated the economic impact of edging on wood grading, using a sample of 550 "B" grade pieces from three sawmills in Pinar del Río, Cuba. An analysis method was applied that measured the width reduction required to upgrade to "A" grade (7.5 cm minimum), considering prices updated according to local regulations. The results showed that 70% of the pieces could have improved their quality (25% required 3 cm, 25% 4 cm, and 20% 4.5 cm of reduction), while 30% maintained their grade. Edging increased revenue by 5%, despite reducing the total volume by 177.37 m³, demonstrating that an accurate operation favors profitability. It was concluded that adjusting the edging significantly improves quality and economic value, driven by the price difference between grades.
