Fruit morphometry and post-seminal evaluation of Fraxinus caroliniana Mill. subsp. cubensis (Griseb.) Borhidi
Main Article Content
Abstract
The conservation of critically endangered timber species, such as Fraxinus caroliniana subsp. cubensis, is crucial for preserving biodiversity and ecosystem services. This study aimed to characterize fruit morphometry and post-seminal development of this endemic Cuban subspecies. Mature fruits were collected from six trees in the Ciénaga Majagüillar, and variables such as length, width, and seminiferous area thickness were measured in 180 samples. For the post-seminal evaluation, 140 fruits were planted in a sand and organic soil substrate, recording sprouting (15.8 %) and survival (85.1 %) percentages, as well as root, stem, and plumule lengths. The results showed morphometric homogeneity in the fruits, with average dimensions of 3.88–3.99 mm (length) and 0.93–0.98 mm (width). The seedlings developed satisfactorily post-transplant, although germination was low, possibly due to environmental conditions. It was concluded that fruit morphology is consistent within the studied population and that the seedlings exhibit adaptability to ex situ cultivation, supporting conservation strategies based on sexual propagation.
