Inventory of areas covered by marabou, for energy purposes, through the application of GIS
Main Article Content
Abstract
Quantifying woody biomass for energy is crucial for renewable resource planning. This study aimed to inventory the total aboveground green biomass of Dichrostachys cinerea (marabou) in the municipality of Camagüey, Cuba, for energy and activated carbon production purposes. Geographic Information Systems (GIS) were used to delineate the effective area, classifying the marabou into diameter categories (fine and medium). A random sampling of 60 plots of 25 m² was used to measure diameters and densities, and an allometric model was used to estimate biomass. The results showed a total area of 6,310.45 ha covered by marabou, with 2,793.04 ha of fine marabou and 3,517.41 ha of medium marabou, equivalent to 51,754.99 and 284,804.53 tons of biomass, respectively. It was concluded that the integration of GIS and field sampling allows for precise quantification, with medium-sized marabou trees exhibiting the greatest energy potential. Differentiated harvesting technologies were recommended based on diameter category and predominant land tenure type.
