Comparative analysis of the results of the dendrometric assessment and of the carbon removed in an area of the Macurije EAF
Main Article Content
Abstract
Forests constitute essential multifunctional ecosystems for mitigating climate change through the removal of atmospheric carbon, a service that in Cuba is quantified by the difference in timber stocks. This study aimed to determine carbon removal and the associated economic incentive at the Máquina de Pepe Rosa site, belonging to the Macurije Agroforestry Company, using data from the ECOVALOR project. Five permanent 500 m² plots were established in a natural Pinus caribaea pine forest, where the level of degradation was assessed using 12 indicators and dasometric variables were measured in 2020 and 2023. Carbon stocks by deposit and CO₂ removal were calculated using the LPT and SUMFOR systems. The results showed a constant and low overall level of degradation (1), although density and a bias towards small diameters remained critical factors despite a 23% thinning applied between the two years. Carbon removal reached 4,396.31 t of CO₂ during the period, equivalent to 1.79 tC/ha/year, generating an economic incentive of $30,775.58 for the company. It was concluded that the stock difference method is effective for quantifying climate regulation services, although the need for simulation tools to optimize silvicultural interventions to improve stand structure and enhance carbon sequestration in sustainably managed forests was evident.
