Evaluation of dasometric and carbon removal in forest areas of the Guanahacabibes Agroforestry Enterprise
Main Article Content
Abstract
The capture of atmospheric carbon by forest ecosystems constitutes a key environmental service for climate change mitigation and biodiversity conservation. This study was conducted to evaluate the carbon balance and associated economic incentive in three forest areas (Bolondrón, La Fé, and La Base) of the Guanahacabibes Agroforestry Company in Cuba, during the years 2020 and 2023. Permanent sampling plots of 500 m² were randomly distributed, where the diameter at breast height and total height of the trees were measured to calculate timber volumes, and the SUMFOR v-5.02 system was applied to estimate CO₂ retention and net removal by stock difference. The results showed an initial total volume of 122,937.29 m³, which increased to 152,326.48 m³ in 2023, with a net removal of -85,374.57 tCO₂, confirming that the three areas function as carbon sinks. The Bolondrón natural forest exhibited the greatest annual increase (15.08 m³/ha/year) compared to the La Fé (1.14) and La Base (7.86) plantations. In conclusion, carbon sequestration generated a total economic incentive of $316,320.71 for environmental services, demonstrating the viability of this mechanism for promoting sustainable forest management in Cuba.
