Carbon sequestration and baseline of the UEB Santo Domingo, Villa Clara Agroforestry Company
Main Article Content
Abstract
Quantifying the carbon sequestered in forest ecosystems is essential for assessing their role as sinks in climate change mitigation. The objective of this study was to determine carbon stocks and their projections in the forest heritage of the UEB Santo Domingo, Villa Clara Agroforestry Company. Different ecosystem components (soil, biomass, and necromass) were assessed in various units, including established forest plantations. The results showed that soil constituted the main reservoir, accounting for almost three-quarters of the total carbon sequestered. Among the plantations, Pinus caribaea was identified as the species with the highest individual contribution to carbon accumulation. Carbon sequestration was projected to experience a substantial increase by 2032, driven primarily by continued accumulation in established plantations. It was concluded that while current technical management generates a weak contribution to sustainable management, the potential for growth is significant, highlighting the need to optimize forest management strategies to maximize this ecosystem service.
