Results of the environmental education program in the Pueblo Nuevo, Pinares de Mayarí
Main Article Content
Abstract
Environmental education is essential for promoting sustainable development and the conservation of natural resources. This study aimed to implement an environmental education program in the community of Pueblo Nuevo, Pinares de Mayarí, to foster knowledge, skills, and values regarding environmental protection and sustainable resource use. Empirical methods were used, such as interviews with key stakeholders (delegates, teachers, community leaders), discussions with students, tours of degraded mining areas, and screenings of educational videos. In addition, an interest group was created with students to create crafts with natural materials, and educational materials were distributed. The results showed an increase in environmental awareness, especially among young people and women, although challenges persisted, such as low participation in reforestation and a lack of curricular integration of mining issues. The actions implemented, such as workshops and debates, strengthened values such as love of nature and environmental responsibility. It was concluded that the program was effective in raising awareness, but requires greater institutional coordination and continuity to ensure the rehabilitation of degraded areas and the sustainability of the actions.
