Productive and environmental response of Gliricidia sepium in live fences in livestock ecosystems of Jimaguayú
Main Article Content
Abstract
The integration of trees into livestock systems is key to improving productivity and sustainability in tropical regions with degraded soils. This study evaluated the productive and environmental responses of Gliricidia sepium in live fences in Jimaguayú, Camagüey, Cuba. Foliage yield was measured at 90 and 180 days post-cutting, along with monthly litter deposition and soil macrofauna abundance under trees and in treeless pastures. Results showed that dry matter yield increased significantly (*p* < 0.001) at 180 days (1.25 kg/tree/cutting) compared to 90 days (0.54 kg/tree/cutting). Litter deposition reached 335 kg/ha/month (4.02 t/ha/year), surpassing previous studies with other species. Furthermore, soil macrofauna (annelids and beetles) were more abundant under trees (499 individuals/m²) than in treeless grasslands (330 individuals/m²). It was concluded that G. sepium improves forage productivity, enriches the soil with leaf litter, and promotes soil biodiversity, making it a sustainable alternative for livestock systems in tropical conditions.
