First published in 1959 as a bulletin titled Baracoa , chosen for its focus on the city's biodiversity, it evolved into a magazine in 1971. It adopted its current name and began distribution in Spanish in several countries, including Sweden , Spain , Brazil , and Canada . It is sponsored by the Forest Research Institute , part of the Ministry of Agriculture . An electronic version was also launched in 1971.
